Acadia Insurance, a regional insurance company in the Northeast, retained Harriman to renovate a 10,551-sq.-ft. section of their home office in Westbrook to allow for an expansion of operating space, meeting, and training space. The renovation was phased to allow expansion while providing space for operations to continue during construction.
Renovations included a flexible lecture hall space with retractable walls allows for intimate space for smaller groups or open expanded space which can accommodate up to 150 people in both fixed and moveable seating as well as expansion of the mailroom to accommodate additional work stations. Upgrades were also made to the audio/visual systems in this space. The perimeter space was reworked to increase storage and improve flow of kitchen and vending. The development of the center portion of the lower level known as “Acadia Commons,” created a communal break-out space and cafeteria themed as an outdoor space. The use of varied sized drum lights at differing heights created a bright cloud effect.
Every effort was made to increase access to natural daylight in his interior space by replacing walls with windowed walls with glazing for privacy. A warm color palette was used with chrome ccents to give the space an inviting modern feel.
