Sustainable Design 

Our commitment to sustainable design is evident through the communities we plan and the buildings we design and engineer. Conserving energy, reducing waste, and recycling materials have always been primary considerations in our designs for both new and renovated facilities. Our philosophy is to design buildings that contribute to the well-being of its occupants, while reducing the operational energy costs and the environmental impacts.

Harriman has designed many LEED certified and high performance buildings for a variety of project types including healthcare, educational, retail, and corporate clients. Our staff includes many LEED (Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design) Accredited Professionals, and includes both licensed architects and engineers who are experienced in designing to the U.S. Green Building Council’s LEED Rating System. We manage the online LEED certification process for the entire building project, making a fully integrated, holistic approach to sustainable design. However, the incorporation of sustainable strategies has been a hallmark of Harriman’s practice long before LEED or other incentive scoring systems were in existence. These efforts are part of how we create environments that sustain and benefit the overall wellbeing of their users.

Several years ago we proposed a geothermal heating and cooling plant for Bowdoin College in Brunswick, Maine.  The idea was that a two-dormitory renovation project would benefit from the installation of a common geothermal well field to heat and cool the dorms. By analysis, the installation is saving the college even more energy than originally predicted, bringing the simple payback time from 7 years to just under 6 years.

Harriman completed a Sustainable Technologies Implementation Audit for a major semiconductor manufacturer in New England at their Portland, Maine site. The audit was focused on applying wind power, geothermal heating and cooling, solar preheating of air, fuel cell technology, and cogeneration to the site.  The audit found ways for the site to incorporate wind, geothermal, solar and fuel cells into their operations.

Harriman completed a Utility Master Plan for the University of New Hampshire in Durham. UNH has been a leader in alternative thinking about campus utilities. Their landfill gas pipeline project will heat, cool, and power the campus using the waste product of a neighbor. Harriman helped UNH continue this alternative thinking by developing a master plan focused on applying sustainable technologies to the university’s expansion plans. This included the analysis of fuel cells, geothermal heating and cooling, and solar heating.

Harriman’s 2030 Commitment

Harriman is committed to reducing the use of fossil fuels by complying with the guidelines of the 2030 Challenge, as well as committed to reducing our energy consumption by documenting our energy reduction strategies and results with the American Institute of Architect’s 2030 Commitment.

Harriman’s core philosophy is that we should conserve our limited resources and be good stewards of the planet by designing with sustainable materials and engineering systems that reduce our overall energy consumption.
