Waterfront Planning

From planning for small coastal communities to the redevelopment of large urban centers, Harriman has completed an array of waterfront projects throughout New England, including park designs, recreation area master plans, waterfront development projects, harbor plans, and pier and ferry terminal projects. We use sustainable principles to promote the desired growth and investment on parcels of all sizes.

At the core of our successful waterfront practice is our ability to provide vision and create illuminating concepts that celebrate the continuity and meaning of the coastline.

Waterfronts are challenging environments for the design of new places, buildings, and facilities. In addition to the complexity of the physical environment at the edge of the water, waterfronts typically are subject to multiple jurisdictions and complicated regulatory standards at local, state and federal levels. Waterfront projects draw public interest and advocacy, requiring effective approaches to community engagement and consensus building skills.

Harriman recognizes the vital importance to merge multiple agendas into a clear and common pathway to a preferred future for an area. Our waterfront team provides the technical planning skills required to establish a widely supported plan that enables the implementation of a vision over time. Our projects benefit from the analytical abilities of our team to identify problems and opportunities. We offer guidance that enables the accomplishment of all stages of the planning process, from visioning to implementation. Key to our project success is effective communication and the ability to listen to diverse stakeholders, exchange information, and express compelling conclusions. Harriman has developed techniques that emphasize the need to listen, record, and understand the concerns and aspirations of all of the participants in a planning process. We routinely plunge into controversial projects and receive praise at the end from individuals who began the process with opposing points of view.

Urban Design for Waterfront Redevelopment – Harriman has prepared urban design plans and design standards for waterfronts at many scales and for both public and private clients, ranging from large projects in urban cities, coastal communities, and small island communities.

Water Transportation – Harriman has established a distinctive specialization in the planning and design of ferry terminals, cruise terminals and water taxi facilities that are integrated into urban and regional transportation systems. Harriman has undertaken numerous water transportation projects, ranging from feasibility evaluations to architectural and landscape architecture for renovations and new facilities. Our work is rooted in strong analytical tools and methods associated with the particular landside and waterside circumstances of each facility, recognizing the considerable differences from other types of transportation facilities.

Harborwalks and Waterfront Parks – Harriman’s services have ranged from preparing initial design concepts, design standards and completing final design through construction for a range of waterfront parks and walkways.
